Window questions, answered
What are R-values and U-values?
R-value is a material’s resistance to heat flow: the higher, the better. U-value is the amount of heat that passes through: the lower, the better the insulation.
What is Low-E, argon-filled glass?
Low-E glass has a clear metallic oxide coating that lets light through but reflects long-wave heat, improving the U-value. Argon is a harmless, colourless gas, denser than air, used between the panes to slow heat transfer.
How does insulating glass help?
- Better U-values and R-values
- Less condensation
- Keeps heat in during winter
- Keeps heat out during summer
Why do windows get condensation?
Condensation, or “sweating”, happens on all windows. Humidity in the air turns to droplets when it meets a cooler surface.
